What's the state of the Austin FC roster now?
After Friday's roster moves dropped, Verde's officially down to 20 players. Realistically, though, they have even less.
Austin FC sporting director Rodolfo Borrell has some work to do — and now some room in which to do it.
As a result of Austin FC’s announced roster moves on Friday — with the club parting ways with most of the players they could have brought back — Austin’s officially down to 20 players on the roster.
But that’s really 18 for the time being in Austin, as Jhohan Romaña remains on loan (though he’s due back at the end of 2023), as does Moussa Djitté (in Turkey until mid-2024). I don’t expect either of those players to feature for Verde ever again, though, and I think that’s perfectly fine.
Though the club remains hush-hush on the rumored Nick Lima trade, there’s enough online smoke about his departure to assume he won’t be around in a few weeks.
And though Friday’s release said there are still things to talk about with Hector Jimenez, the future coach (perhaps in the Austin FC system, which would be a good thing) only played in two MLS matches (plus a handful of cup matches) in 2023, going just a half in one and five minutes in another. It’s hard to imagine he’d be brought back given those paltry 50 minutes, but perhaps he’s in a role that works for the club for at least one more season.
In ascertaining the state of the roster, let’s start with what we know and work from there.
